I am very happy to announce the release of  limited edition, archival gicleé prints I have printed from “Mainely for Vacation”, a watercolor I painted while in Maine this past summer.

“Mainely for Vacation” was painted while I was on a watercolor workshop in Maine with artist David Dewey last August. One overcast morning, we met at Bob’s, a fellow student in David’s class, who has a waterfront home on Marshall Point near Port Clyde. I noticed a small cottage a few houses down the beach and went to investigate. I was immediately drawn to this strange little red house that had a rather mysterious air about it. It looked like good painting material and I noticed that several of my fellow students were thinking the same thing. Fortunately, the house was empty for we had all claimed a stake in the back and side yards.

The painting is loose and carefree and was a total joy to paint. I began the painting playing with complementary colors, simple shapes, and varying intensities of color.  The painting was done mostly on location with a few minor touches in the studio. I am very happy with the results.

I knew this painting would translate very well into gicleé prints. This job gave me an opportunity to work once again with an old friend and former employer, Garry McElwee, of Artist Services in Jacksonville, Florida. Garry is now devoting most of his time to archival printing and does a superb job at it. With his years of experience as a commercial photographer and designer, he is an artist himself which brings a good sense of aesthetics and artistic understanding to the printing process. But Garry’s real expertise is in the area of color management, a very essential element in the gicleé printing process and one that is not always fully understood by a lot of printers.

Technical information:

The image was printed on Hahnemühle William Turner 310 gsm paper with a Roland FJ 500 printer using eight pigment-based Pantone Hexachrome inks. A ClearStar coating spray was applied after printing to protect the print from UV rays and moisture.
