“Longboard Day (Beach & 7th Street)”
A while back I was set up with my plein air gear on Beach & 7th Street in Atlantic Beach and did several small studies in a sweet, hardbound sketchbook I have that is filled with blank, Arches 140 lb. watercolor paper. While waiting for washes to dry on one of the studies, I decided to photograph people walking, biking, skating and running by me for reference purposes. This figure won the contest. The guy politely obliged when I asked him to ride by me several times to get the perfect shot. I got what I wanted and did this painting in the studio. This image reminds me of the many creative bike rigs that surfers carrying a bulkier board come up with. This one may not be that special but the milk crate adds color and that is an added bonus for my painting!
To view this painting and more, make sure to see Robert Leedy’s “Beach Access” show which runs July 18th through August 12th, 2011. You are also invited to the opening reception on Thursday night, July 21st, 2011 from 5 – 9 pm. Stop by and have a glass of wine and see these paintings!
