“Hoagies’ Alley”
“Hoagies’ Alley”,
by Robert Leedy, 1977,
watercolor on paper,
18.5 x 13.75 in.,
Collection of the Artist
This is a painting that has followed me around for a long time. I painted it while in school and consider it one of my earliest watercolors. Here I learned to zero in on the subject matter and I created a focal point by utilizing contrasts of light & dark – along with a small blast of intense color. The railings are painted in complementary colors which sets off the entire painting. Compositionally, the design is strong and balanced.
Joe Pember was my watercolor professor back then and I owe him a lot for what I know now. I would love to know where he might be these days…
