“Mechanic Street II”
“Mechanic Street II”,
by Robert Leedy, 2004,
watercolor on Arches 140 lb. Cold Press paper,
8.25 x 11 in.,
Collection of the Kathryn Humphries, Atlantic Beach, Florida
This is a smaller version of “Mechanic Street” which I started while I was painting the larger one. When painting on location, I often have a second, smaller work going on while working on larger works. This gives me a chance to experiment with composition, colors, etc..
“Mechanic Street II” concentrates even more on the boat; the dominant shape of the boat hull is a lyrical and dynamic part of the overall composition. The fluid lines of the hull are juxtaposed to the triangular shapes of the houses in the background. This painting was a rapid execution and eventually became one of my favorite pieces from this particular stay in Maine.
