After two weeks of painting in David Dewey’s Maine workshop, I took a weekend visit to Monhegan Island with friends.
The Keeper’s House is a museum on top of a hill overlooking town. Rather than tackle the incredible vista from up there, I concentrated on the building and a boat parked out front. It was a brilliant, sunny day – and a great one for plein air painting.
I completed most of this painting on site then finished it up later in my studio in Denver. When I unpacked the painting, I took a look at the sky and wondered where in the world I came up with those colors in the clouds. Ironically, a few days later I was Googling ‘Monhegan’ and ran into a photograph taken on Monhegan that had the exact same spotty, violet clouds.
I think I captured the brilliance of the light that day.
