“Grand Canal I”
“Grand Canal I”,
by Robert Leedy, 2003,
6.5 x 11.125 in.,
watercolor on paper,
Collection of Michel Bourgeois,
Paris, France
This was one of the first small paintings I completed in Venice. It is a view of Santa Maria della Salute looking across the Grand Canal. This was done early one morning at the end of a small street facing the canal. I had several other paintings going at once that morning. Some were quite disastrous due to the constant, drizzling rain. Although we had a mix of good and bad weather while there, I constantly fought with slow drying paper due to the humidity. Many of my paintings were finished in the studio and with the aid of a hair dryer.
