“17:30 Garda Impressions”
“17:30 Garda Impressions”,
by Robert Leedy, 2002,
watercolor on Arches Hot Press paper,
12.25 x 11.25 in.,
Collection of the Artist
As the title might suggest, this was a painting done at 5:30 pm in the afternoon. It is the second painting in a series of three completed – all about an hour apart. The location was beautiful Lake Garda in Northern Italy.
Rather than paint in the details of a landscape, I chose to go for the overall mood of the scene around me. It was a bit foggy and the sun was slowly setting over the mountains bordering the lake.
I obviously painted this wet-into-wet for a very impressionistic effect. I painted in the structure in the lower left-hand corner to establish it as a landscape painting.
Although very loosely painted, the sky came off very well and looks exactly as it did that day.
Note: This painting was done during a workshop with artist Louise Freshman Brown & il Chiostro in Lake Garda, Italy during the fall of 2002.
