This is a painting from the second day of the workshop. This was a lesson in value which is a key point for David Dewey. Unlike many watercolorists who work from light to dark, David often begins with a stronger dark throughout the painting to establish value. I started this painting with a large, middle value wash to define the value pattern in the painting. On fresh white paper (in the bright sun) the wash looked much darker than how it actually dried. Shapes and objects were then defined with darker values and the addition of color. The value pattern creates a sort of underpainting and starts the painting off with a large, interesting shape that creates visual excitement.

Oh yes – Lorraine II is the name of the boat…
